Final Fantasy XVI’s story takes players through an emotional journey I got a look at the game as it was meant to be experienced up until chapter three, and what I saw was a game-of-the-year contender. The gameplay covered the entirety of Clive’s early adult life, and the beginning of his journey as an adult. ![]() At this preview, press were given more time with the game, and were able to experience the first few hours of the story. Each one has an Eikon they send out to help aid them in the fight, which translates to epic Eikon battles throughout the game where players will get to experience what it’s like to be a powerful, magical creature.ĭuring the first hands-on preview, press got a close look at the combat and what Eikon battles will look like. The demo was “a special version made for media to experience, and contents may differ from the final version.” Press were able to play through the first two chapters of the game, as well as one of the open, explorable areas in the game.įinal Fantasy XVI is a role-playing game filled with controversy as kingdoms fight amongst each other over magical crystals. But with Final Fantasy XVI, I highly anticipate that the story will bring me to tears, make me laugh, and take me on an emotional journey.Ī recent hands-on event for Final Fantasy XVI gave press a small taste of exactly what kind of story director Hiroshi Takai is trying to tell. Even Final Fantasy XIV can’t really compare to those endings, as much as I love the stories from that game. It’s rare that I can find a story within a video game that can beat those feelings. For a franchise that has more than a handful of revolutionary female characters in gaming, it was definitely a step back for XV to only focus on a cast of male characters.I will never forget the sobbing that occurred while playing through the end of Ori and the Blind Forest and its sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Barely any of them get any character development or lack true relevance to the story as a whole. A lot of the plot points that were seen in the initial Versus XIII were repurposed for XV, but it definitely lacked impact in many ways.īeyond that, the biggest sin Final Fantasy XV commits is with its female characters. Not only that, but the hyper realistic world of Final Fantasy XV was a lot more sterile and generic than what fans expected from Versus XIII. Character switching was eventually added in the Royal Edition of the game, which added all kinds of quality-of-life updates. Players were only able to control Noctis in the base game. To this day, many longtime fans look back fondly at this trailer and the ideas it presented.įinal Fantasy XV did not deliver in this regard as it didn’t even have the character switching mechanics upon release. On its initial reveal, Final Fantasy Versus XIII presented a dark stylistic world, with Noctis and his crew being able to seamlessly maneuver and battle around open worlds. But on a macro level, this is where many players find the faults of this game. Very much on a micro level, Final Fantasy XV does a lot of things right in presenting a roadtrip/wedding engagement gone wrong, thanks to political meddling and ancient gods waging war. Which is why Ardyn stands toe to toe with the likes of Kefka, Sephiroth, and Seymour from previous games with his immaculate fashion, conniving plans, and formidable powers. Gladio will make sure that Noctis’s fighting skills are up to par, Ignis cooks meals for the team, and Prompto documents everything with his camera.Īs great as the protagonists are, good villains are also just as important in the grand scheme of things. This extended into the gameplay as well, with each character serving a specific function in the welfare of Noctis and his journey towards becoming king. ![]() Final Fantasy games are known for their cast of characters, and XV delivered on this front as Noctis, Gladio, Prompto, and Ignis truly act like brothers in arms. ![]() The main characters, Prince Noctis and his three stalwart friends, are definitely the highlight of this game.
